Jamie lay on the ground in the universal sign of rodent surrender. "I've come to help you," she said. "I found your babies, and they're worried about you."
The white mouse examined Jamie closely. Finally she lowered her guard. "My husband ate a little pellet of food he found, but it made him sick. He made it this far but then had to rest. A bird was helping us, but he had to distract that cat away from our nest."
Jamie got to her feet. "I'll help you get him back home." Together, Jamie and the white mouse half carried, half dragged the large grey mouse back to the nest. The babies were beside themselves with joy.
"We were so worried about you," said Emily. "We were afraid we'd never see you again!" "Yeah," chimed in the littlest mouse.
After helping the mice settle back in, Jamie went looking for food. Before the sun came up, she had built up a nice little hoard of food, enough to last the little family for a week.
The father mouse was awake now, and feeling a little better. "Thank you for all your help, cousin," he said. "You're welcome to visit with us any time you like."
Jamie smiled her best gerbil smile and said "I'm glad I could help." And she spent the rest of the night telling the four babies stories of her other many adventures.
