Jamie 2 - Exploring the Yard run_like_mad

Very carefully so that Mittens wouldn't notice, Jamie tensed every muscle in her body. Mittens didn't move. Suddenly, without warning, Jamie dug her back feet into the soft dirt and sprang forward.

With the growl of the hunter Mittens leapt after her, batting her back and forth as she scampered this way and that, frantically trying to find a hole large enough to slip into but too small for Mittens to follow. "Mittens is having the time of her life," Jamie thought. " I wish I could say the same."

Just as she was about to collapse in surrender, Jamie spotted a small hole in the soft earth and half crawled, half rolled into it. She rolled down the gentle slope until she reached the bottom, then stopped, her breathing loud and fast and her heart beating loudly in her ears.

She could hear Mittens digging frantically at the opening to Jamie's cave, angry and frustrated at this unexpected ending to her game. But whatever had created the hole had made it deep. To Jamie, Mitten's digging seemed to get fainter as her efforts collapsed the soft earth around the entrance, blocking out the moonlight (and Jamie's eventual route of escape from the tunnel). Finally, Jamie heard a muffled little "grrrr" of defeat, and the digging sounds stopped.

"Whew!" thought Jamie. "I've got to be more careful, or I'll be lunch." Jamie lifted her tired and aching body from the floor and sniffed the air. "Perhaps I should explore this little cave," she thought. "Or maybe something else lives here." Jamie shuttered. "Something hungry..."

Explore the little cave.

Leave the cave.
