In the direction the smallest mouse was pointing, Jamie noticed that the smaller weeds had been bent. She followed the path made by the broken weeds, which wandered back and forth through the patch of tall weeds, and finally out into the yard. Try as she might, Jamie couldn't follow the trail any further.
Walking in the same general direction, Jamie wandered through the yard searching for more clues to the missing mice. The moon began to sink low in the sky by the time Jamie admitted she had lost the trail. Soon the sun would come up, and Lucy would discover she was missing. Sadly, Jamie walked back toward the house and looked for the patch of weeds where the baby mice lived. But, no matter how hard she searched, she couldn't find it again.
Finally, exhausted and thirsty, Jamie searched along the house wall until she found a way back in, and returned to her cage. She often thought about the baby mice, and wondered if their Mom and Dad made it back. Surely they did. "After all," Jamie thought, "Moms and Dads always come through in the end."
