Jamie set out across the yard to see how far she could go. The air was clean and fresh, and the moon provided plenty of light. Jamie discovered more flowers, rocks, and insects than she ever dreamed could exist. Just how big IS this world, anyway, she wondered.
At last she came to a fast-moving creek. She sat on the edge of the water, watching leaves and twigs and water-bugs float past, and wondered what it would be like to be a fish. She held her breath and smiled. Not as much fun as a being a gerbil she was sure.
Her dreams were interrupted with a loud "RRRRRRruufff" behind her. Jamie jumped so high that she barely saw the big dog behind her. She landed, ker-SPLASH, in the creek.
The water was C-C-C-Cold! Jamie struggled to the surface, then was washed under again by a large stick. Once again she struggled to the surface, and looked frantically about for something to grab. She gerbil-paddled frantically to keep her head above water.
At last she washed next to shore and was able to struggle back onto dry ground. She lay flat on the sand, heaving and shivering. Slowly her heart returned to its normal pace, and Jamie lifted her head. The moon was still shining, the air was still fresh, and she was still cold.
Jamie walked briskly back to the house, shivering the entire way. As she crawled over her cage and back into her warm bed, Jamie decided that she was very, very, VERY glad that she wasn't a fish.
