The cave was so dark that Jamie couldn't see at all, but her whiskers helped her find her way. After a short while the tunnel split two ways. Jamie sniffed carefully; one way the air smelled musty and foul, the other way much cleaner. Better stick to the better air, she decided. I can always come back later, once I know what lives here.
As Jamie walked and walked, her feet joined the rest of her little body in aching and complaining. Finally she saw a little light up ahead, and hurried forward. Just as she thought, an opening to the outside. But what was that blocking her escape?
Jamie froze and watched. The creature in the entrance waited patiently, then slowly slithered forward. "Oh oh," Jamie thought, "a snake. Do snakes eat gerbils?" She thought back to the stories her mother had told her in the pet store aquarium. Yes, she seemed to recall her mother warning her about snakes.
Jamie slowly backed up, matching the snake's speed. She thought furiously. The only other entrance to the tunnel that she knew of had been closed by Mittens. She might be able to dig it out, but could she in time? Maybe she could hide in the other tunnel, once she reached the split.
