Jamie reached the split in the tunnel, but kept backing toward the entrance filled with dirt. Then she stopped. She heard the sides of the snake scraping the tunnel wall as it turned, then the slithering noises disappeared down the other tunnel. The snake had turned!
Joyfully, Jamie ran forward, up and out of the underground tunnel. She gulped the wonderful fresh air, and basked in the moonlight. Free at last!
Jamie gathered a few treats for herself, an acorn and some clover leaves, then headed back to her cage (being careful to climb over the top, so that Lucy wouldn't discover that she had been exploring again). Although tired, bruised and scratched, Jamie was happy. Life would be so boring without adventures, she decided. And her life was definitely not boring.
