Jamie decided to look in the place that the bird had been; perhaps she would find some clues there. Jamie walked slowly, with her ears held high and her nose sniffing furiously. Soon she found the area of crushed weeds where the bird had been. And, right in the middle she saw a large grey mouse, laying very still with his eyes closed.
Very carefully Jamie crept forward, keeping one eye out for Mittens and the other for the bird. The grey mouse was alive, but he didn't look well. Jamie nuzzled his face, but he didn't move.
Suddenly a white mouse, just slightly smaller than Jamie, came crashing out of the weeds. "Leave him alone," she squeaked, "or you'll regret it." She began walking toward Jamie menacingly.
