Jamie is a gerbil - not just ANY gerbil, but LUCY's gerbil. Lucy is the six year old girl who lives in the big house at the end of Spring Street, next to the creek and the big open field. She loves Barbie dolls, hot dogs, bicycles, and swimming. And she loves Jamie.
Jamie lives is a cage (she prefers to call it her "room") on a table by the window. Lucy keeps her cage clean, gives her plenty of water and food (especially the treats), and plays with her often. Jamie makes her bed from the soft paper towels that Lucy gives her, although she also will throw in a scrap of cloth or some dried grass when she can find them.
Jamie loves to explore new places and try new things. She is also very smart - so smart that she can often open her cage, all by herself, while Lucy is out of the room. Which is just what happened one spring morning...
