You select the cleanest corner you can find and settle in for the night, determined not to go to sleep (sleeping seems unhealthy, given the current environment). You hear owls hooting in the distance, and an occasional scraping noise upstairs, but you are too frightened to investigate. Sometime after midnight the penlight's battery is exhausted. Afraid of the dark, you look around -- but you can find nothing to provide light. You huddle in the dim moonlight, your eyes wide with fright. Your imagination sees movement everywhere. Suddenly, the moon drifts behind a cloud, and the room is draped in darkness. Then, you hear a slow long moan, which grows louder... and louder . . . and LOUDER. . . . . Unable to contain your terror, you leap to your feet and fling yourself through the nearest window. The old glass shatters as your body clears the window sill by at least a foot, and as you run in full flight toward home, you realize you are bleeding from dozens of cuts all over your body. Your parents are shocked to see you, bloody and covered with dirt and cobwebs, come staggering through the door. Over your protests, they take you to the hospital, where the doctor adds a few stitches and decides to keep you overnight. The next day the members of Shadow Flight come to visit you. They apologize over and over again, and you can tell they're very sorry about what happened. "We'd really like for you to join our club," Kim offers. "You certainly proved that you are brave enough, and you did your best to uphold your flight instructions." |
