You have wanted to join this club all school year; what a dumb question! "Yes" you state firmly, your jaw set with determination.
"No more ignoring directions or asking dumb questions?" You bristle at the question - who does this guy think he is, anyway? However, all you manage is a weak "Yes".
"Let the hazing begin..."
The voice continues. "All you have to do to become a member of Shadow Flight is to spend the night in the old Rigby house. You know... " (the voice becomes menacing) "...the haunted one."
The way he says "haunted" sends a shiver up your spine. You've heard the legend, of course. Old man Rigby lived like a hermit, shut up in that old house night after night after dreary night. Finally, he died -- some say of loneliness, some say intentionally to get farther away from other people.
He had no relatives and no friends, and precious little money. The city now owned his old house, but no one would buy it. After all, everyone knew it was haunted -- by old man Rigby.
His tired old bones (they said) couldn't bear the thought of people, strange people, living in his house. So whenever a buyer would show up, so would Rigby's ghost (they said), making noises and slamming doors and casting shadows in mirrors. Finally the realtor was hurt when the ghost (they said) pushed a lamp off the wall onto her head; after that, no more buyers came.
Staying in old man Rigby's house tonight doesn't strike you as a healthy idea.
