The original staircases (one is behind Dale in the photo) are no longer used, as the stairs have been worn into more of a bumpy ramp (but no, the Italians don't have an Americans with Disabilities Act equivalent, either). A new, brick staircase was available, but most people opted for the elevator.
Originally, 80 entrances were available (segregated by social class), but now only one entrance and one exit is used. Many of the others store huge stones waiting to be restored - or at least studied.
The square holes in the walls were used by the Romans to hold the scaffolding. They weren't filled in, because scaffolding would be needed to make repairs and perform maintenance. Cool - ancient manufacturing artifacts (flash)!
