Plaza on Hyde Park Hotel
We dozed during the flight, sneaking in about 4 hours of sleep before arriving at London Gatwick at about 8 a.m.
Our immediate problem on arrival in London was how to reach our hotel. On the advice of a travel consultant in the airport, we purchased train tickets from Gatwick to Victoria Station in London, where (after an extensive and animated discussion) I caught a taxi to the hotel (with all 300 pounds of luggage) while the remainder of the family took the London Underground (subway in American English, but commonly known here as "The Tube".)
Our rooms at the Plaza weren't ready on arrival, but the staff set us up in a cubbyhole with two sofas, two chairs, a table, and a TV playing CNN. We feasted on bangers and mash (where has that been all my life!), and while the kids dozed Janet and I planned.
Around 2:00 p.m. on Dec 22, we were given keys to four rooms - a triple for the kids, and three from which to choose for us. By far the nicest adult room was at the far end of the hotel - definitely too far away to these (over?)protective parents. The other two were quaint but quite small. We opted for the smallest room because it had a bathtub rather than just a shower - and then never found time for a bath! (Yes, I know what you're thinking - we took showers.)
However, the Plaza on Hyde Park was very comfortable overall, and the staff (especially the concierge) was consistently professional and willing to go to any reasonable lengths to meet our needs. Definitely recommended.
Here, Elizabeth is playing (what else?) Monopoly on her bed while waiting for the water closet (bathroom to us Americans) for a post-flight shower.
