At the Eurail Station in London
We could not travel to Paris on December 26, because that is Boxing Day in England and the BritRail trains don't run. (Eurail does run, but only from London to Paris - we couldn't get from Leasowe to London without a car, and Auto Europe was a no-show.) Thus, we took an extra day at Leasowe Castle, and traveled on December 27.
This was our nearest "big disaster" - Eurail was closed for both Christmas and Boxing Day, and I couldn't cancel our Eurail reservations for December 26. The very nice Eurail representative assured me that this meant I needed to purchase entirely new tickets for the 27th - my existing, paid for tickets were simply no good anymore. After 15 minutes of pleading and calm discussion (I never yell or make snide remarks in a situation such as this - it just never helps), she relented and allowed us to board a late train that was nearly empty anyway. So, we had a 4 hour layover, but at least were able to use our tickets. (And I was very appreciative - the terms were clear on the ticket, and she had no obligation at all to let us travel.)
During the layover, we found a quiet corner of the station, and variously knitted, read, or played Monopoly.
