Leasowe Castle

This is the front of Leasowe Castle, where we spent three lovely nights and days. It was originally build by a member of royalty to simplify watching the dog races (it is thought), and was originally just a single tower. It was expanded a bit later, and then about 100 years ago a hotel was built out of the back (toward the sea).

The rooms were spacious and comfortable, and the staff absolutely marvelous. We walked to the Texaco near the entrance and discovered "digestibles" - basically a chocolate-covered cookie that was truly a delight. I'd trade Fig Newtons for digestibles 7 days a week.

The only area in which the staff fell short was supper, oddly enough. Each evening meal was a new adventure.

  • One night we were instructed to go to the dining room, where we were refused seating (no reservations) and sent to the bar to eat (we refused, and ate digestibles for supper :-).
  • The second night we carefully made reservations for 7:00, only to be told at 7:00 that the dining room opened at 8:00 - and at 8:00 that a buffet would be served in the bar at 8:30. (Again to their credit, the very accomodating manager set up a table for us in the tapestry-filled room used for breakfast, so that we could avoid the smoke-filled bar.)
  • The third night we decided to rent a taxi to get to a local pub - but the taxi furnished only provided seating for four. We spent four pounds to not see the local eatery. (Again, the manager offered to drive us himself in his van - an offer we had to refuse, although it did indicate that they were truly concerned about their guests), and instead inquired about the elusive dinner reservations. This time, they came through beautifully, and we savored roast duck (me), sea bass (Janet), rack of lamb (Carol), and chicken (Dale and Elizabeth).

Overall, however, this was my very favorite hotel of the trip. Despite the supper adventures, I'd give them 3 stars easily. Recommended.
